Verbatim or intelligent verbatim?

Verbatim transcription includes every spoken utterance, including all verbal tics, fillers, stutters, half sentences and so on.

Intelligent verbatim omits these ‘glitches’ in speech for the sake of readability, but in essence remains a word-for-word transcription of what is said.

Below are some of the services that I most often provide, with a guide to costs; however, this is not an exclusive list.  I know that every project is different, and I am happy to adapt scripts to meet your particular requirements, using programme-specific templates, formatting conventions, and so on.

I am always open to discuss discounted rates for larger jobs (around ten hours’ worth of footage or more).

For a same-day or early next-day turnaround, please add 75p per minute to the rates below.

Standard Post-Production Transcription – £1.85 – £2.00 per video minute

All spoken word transcribed verbatim or intelligent verbatim, including on-screen text (captions, GFX, subtitles and opening/closing credits) and fully timecoded.  All speakers identified by name.  If relevant, stills and archival material will also be described, transcribed and timecoded.  As standard, timecodes are given at the beginning of each new instance of speech or text; by request, timecodes can also be given at the end of each such instance.

Custom Post-Production Transcription – £2.20 – £4.00 per video minute

As above, but with additional audio-visual information provided in extra columns as required.  This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Timecoded music in/out cues.
  • Scene-by-scene description of on-screen action, in the case of dramas and scripted comedies; or a visual description of individual segments, in the case of documentaries (i.e. interview, voiceover, archive, stills, actuality, et cetera).
  • Shot-by-shot description of on-screen action; every camera shot logged and timecoded in sync with dialogue.  End timecodes of each shot can also be given, as well as the duration of each shot.

These are examples, but feel free to be as particular in your requirements as your project demands.

Voiceover Transcription – £1.25 per video minute

Guide voiceover transcribed verbatim and timecoded, with one line only of sync before and after each section of voiceover.  All other speech and textual elements are omitted.

Rushes / Records Transcription – £1.25 – £1.75 per video minute

Fully timecoded verbatim or intelligent verbatim transcription of unedited footage for documentaries or unscripted shows.  Soundchecks, breaks, et cetera, are not transcribed or charged for.  For a faster turnaround and a lower rate, the interviewer’s questions in documentary rushes can be summarised, rather than transcribed word for word.

Reversions – £ad hoc

Editing and re-timecoding of scripts already completed to correspond with alternate versions of a show: for example, seamless, cut-down, or pre- and post-watershed versions.  The amount of work involved depends on the nature of the project, so rates vary, but will always be considerably less than that of the original versions.

Music Cue Sheets – 75p per video minute

A chronological list of all pieces of music used in a programme, with start and end timecodes and track durations.  The title, composer and publishing credits of each piece are given, along with a brief description of the scene/s during which the music is played.  This information is presented in an Excel spreadsheet.

NOTE: By default timecodes are in the format (HH:MM:SS).  Timecodes can alternatively be given in the format (HH:MM:SS:FF) for a slightly increased per-minute rate.

Audio Transcription – £1.10 per audio minute

For all general transcription work, such as interviews, focus groups, conference calls, legal and medical.  Verbatim or intelligent transcription of audio recordings, including timecodes every five minutes.  Speakers identified by name where possible.  For a lower rate and faster turnaround, speech can be summarised to exclude irrelevant details or repetitions of the same point.

Copy Typing – £20 per hour

Transcription of hard-copy documents, copies of which will be sent to you by email, or printed out and sent in the post.
